Brazen, outspoken and doesn’t give a sh*t what you think. A high-school underachiever turned multi-millionaire global sensation; Gary Vee is one or two titles away from becoming what many people consider to be a modern cliché. However, with anecdotes like “Eat sh*t for 24-months, then eat caviar for the rest of your life” the highly-vocal business guru is cutting through the noise and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s business elite. Additionally, as a LinkedIn influencer and global thought-leader, Gary has undoubtedly ‘crushed the next big thing’ before you’d even thought about it.
Who is Gary Vaynerchuk?
If you’re in the industry there’s a 99% chance you’ve seen his one of his videos, podcasts, Twitter posts or read one of his best-selling books. In fact, the dedicated Belarusian-American entrepreneur makes a point of replying to as many people as possible on social media. So, love him or loathe him; the chances are many of you will have had a personal dose of ‘Gary Vee’ wisdom. Formally a successful wine critic who grew his parents business from a $4 million enterprise to a $60 million empire; Gary founded Vayner Media, a leading full-service global agency now worth over $150 million.
Entrepreneurship is evolving
Social media is now an undeniable factor in the success of businesses around the world. Many of today’s best-loved business icons aren’t tycoons with a strong family name and empire to boot; instead many started out in their bedroom or by selling products out of the back of their car. The internet and smartphones literally put the world into the palm of our hands; which is why the Forbes youngest millionaires rich list continues to grow (and get younger) every year. Ironically, parents who stopped their children from playing video games and using social media in favour of focusing on education, may have caused them to miss out on huge opportunities; considering the rise of Twitch gamers, Instagram influencers and E-Sports players raking in billions in revenue every year.
Great content hinges on storytelling, but while every story in the universe may have already being told, they haven’t been told by you. You are unique, only you can add nuance, perspective and details that no-one else can. With that in mind; it’s important to realise you don’t just have the ability to generate unique creative, you are the creative.
– Gary Vaynerchuk, Crushing it
Businesses must adopt a social strategy to survive
No matter how old or young, established or new a business is, it’s tough to deny that social media now plays a major role in reaching and retaining customers. In fact, if your business doesn’t have a social strategy you’re already behind. Furthermore, instead of hiding the inner workings and personality of your staff, transparency is now the trend. For example, ‘Team Gary Vee” constantly create what’s essentially an online reality show to prove his method (and that his character isn’t just an act). But while few could pull off this level of content creation, the engagement and success it has created is a monumental case study to show how important having a strong personal brand is to the success of modern entrepreneurship.
Today if you choose to disrespect your customers, you’re only one social media post (or viral video of a customer getting dragged off a plane) away from losing your entire reputation. Equally, you’re also only one social media post or viral video away from being a global success.
